Internship Assignments

Information for Current SU Students

Your internship is a kind of independent study. Therefore, you must plan ahead to get the best experience possible. You must coordinate with the Art Internship Coordinator and the employer of the organization where you plan to work to get the most out of this experience. Please type all assignments.

Before Beginning the Internship

A. Detailed Job Description

  • Your Name | Academic Year | Term
  • Name and address of company or organization
  • Name and title of on-site supervisor/mentor
  • Give a complete job description of your internship position.
  • What does your employer expect from you?
  • What do you expect to gain from this experience?
  • Inclusive dates of Internship and planned weekly time schedule

B. Goals and Learning Objectives

  • To increase the value of your experience, respond to the following questions in a two-page double-spaced paper. Do not simply list the questions and answers.
  • What are your long-range life goals?
  • What are your personal goals for this internship experience?
  • What do you have to offer an employer during your internship? (Consider interests, skills, and personal qualities.)
  • What do you hope to learn during your internship? Be specific.
  • What are your career goals (long and short range)?
  • Do you have any fears or concerns about this internship?  If so, what are they? 
  • IF THIS IS YOUR SECOND INTERNSHIP, please reference your prior experiences and how you will build upon them. Are you moving in a new direction, why? How do you expect this to be different from your previous experience?

During the Internship (due upon completion of internship)

All assignments should be typed and turned in together to the art internship coordinator in a binder or folder with a cover sheet that includes the following information:

  • Your Name | Academic Year & Term
  • Name and address of company or organization
  • Name and title of on-site supervisor/mentor
  • Once all materials have been received, they will be reviewed and a P/F grade will be assigned.

E. Coordinate site visit. All students will be visited on-site by the Art Internship Coordinator. During this visit, the intern will show the coordinator around the site, describe his or her responsibilities, and meet with the site supervisor. (15 minutes) It is up to the intern to arrange the date (preferably during the first 30 hours of the internship), making sure the on-site supervisor will be available for part of the visit.

F. An organizational analysis: due no later than 3 weeks from start date. One-page summary of your observations of the mission and the structure of the organization. Describe the relevance of your position to the mission and how you will contribute to the organization.

G. A reflective daily journal. After cover page, use one page to describe your internship location and facilities. Include a description of office space; location in region (urban, suburban, etc). Devote one page each day (dated) you serve in the internship. List the hours you worked, the tasks you performed, the difficulties you faced (if any), your successes and a short summary of what you learned. Be as descriptive as possible. You do not need to fill an entire page, but your entries should be thoughtful and meaningful.

H. A tally of hours, endorsed by supervisor and signed by site supervisor; should total at least 120.

I. Work samples. If you have completed any projects where your work can be seen, include them.

J. A complete and up-to-date résumé (must include the internship experience)

K. Self-Assessment and Evaluation of Internship Form (PDF)

L. An Evaluation of Intern Performance Form (PDF) (completed by your on-site supervisor). Your site supervisor needs to complete an evaluation of your performance, which is sent directly to the Art Internship Coordinator. It is your responsibility to persuade them to complete this evaluation form. A grade cannot be assigned for your internship until this evaluation form is received.

M. A final internship paper. Upon completion of your internship, provide detailed examples of how your coursework related to learning on the job. Consider:

  • What gaps were there in your studies, if any?
  • What courses prepared you best for your internship?
  • How did they prepare you?
  • Were there any courses that you wish you had taken that might have helped your job performance?
