Human Services

Bachelor of Science

Human Services majors spend their time at Stevenson building an extensive base of knowledge about families and individuals and how to provide services for them. The program prepares graduates to embark on careers in human services and for graduate school in programs such as counseling, social work, school counseling, and marriage and family therapy. An Addictions Counseling Track is available for students interested in working with clients who have substance abuse problems or other addiction disorders. A Human Services Administration Track is available for students planning to pursue careers in human services administration, such as human resources, development, and management.

Certifications
Every graduate of the program is eligible for certification as a Human Service Professional (CHSP) by the National Organization for Human Services. Students who choose the Addictions Counseling Track can complete the academic work required for certification by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors as a Certified Associate Counselor-Alcohol & Drug (CAC-AD).

Nationally Accredited Program
The Human Services program is nationally accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Service Education. This accreditation not only recognizes our program as being worthy of public and professional confidence, but it also allows our graduates to apply for the Human Service Professional Credential.

Emphasis on Field Placements
Human Services majors understand the importance of obtaining hands-on experience in the field. Students are placed in agencies related to their specific areas of interest, such as hospitals, colleges, guidance departments of schools, adoption and foster care agencies, schools and centers for children with autism and other emotional or behavioral problems, senior citizen centers, and mental health facilities. These valuable experiences enable our students to put classroom skills and knowledge to the test in the working world world-- a process that prepares graduates for life after SU.

A Human Services minor is also available. Interested students should speak to an Academic Advisor.
